An antique sacrifice 1575 - 1600
-
A drawing of sacrifice before a classical altar. At the centre is a bearded priest pouring a libation onto a flaming altar, his right hand touching a large tablet. Behind him is a trumpet player, and to the left another standing figure. In the foreground is a nude male astride a sacrificial ram. Stamped both lower left and right with the five-pointed star associated with Nicholas Lanier (Lugt 2886), and inscribed in pencil at lower left: M.A. Buona Rota.
The figure astride the ram is based on a similar figure in Michelangelo's Sacrifice of Noah in the Sistine Chapel, and the drawing bears an old ascription to Michelangelo, but the rest of the composition appears to be original. Popham's tentatively attributed the drawing (in P&W) to Passarotti 'or one of his sons or scholars'.
Provenance
Nicholas Lanier (?his five-pointed star, Lugt 2886); probably acquired by Charles II. Listed in George III's Inventory A, c.1800, p.43, 'Mich: Angelo Buonarroti. Tom. I', no.17, 'Sketch of a Sacrifice….Pen.'
