Follower of Baccio Bandinelli (1493-1560)
Christ and St John the Baptist c.1550-75
-
A drawing of St John the Baptist, seated and gesturing towards the standing Christ, leaning on a globe. Popham (in P&W 1949) believed this to be a copy of a late drawing by Bandinelli. The fact that the Baptist points towards Christ with his left hand suggests the original may have been a study for a print (which would reverse the sense, and so have the Baptist pointing correctly with his right hand).
Provenance
Probably one of the drawings listed in George III’s Inventory A, c.1770, p. 17 (an inserted sheet that pre-dates the rest of the inventory), ‘Diversi Maestri Antichi’, Tom. V, ‘13 by Baccio Bandinelli.’ This is probably the same group of 13 drawings listed on p. 47 (c.1800-20), ‘Michael Angelo, Fra: Bartolomeo, And: del Sarto &[c]’, Tom. III, ‘17 to 29 … Various Studys of Baccio Bandinello.’
