Workshop of Baccio Bandinelli (1493-1560)
The Adoration of the Shepherds c.1525-50
-
A drawing of the Adoration of the Shepherds: at far left the sleeping Christ Child, watched over by the Virgin Mary and the ox and ass; St Joseph seated at right; at centre and right are five shepherds, two of them apparently dancing. Another version of this drawing is in the Uffizi, both perhaps by the same pupil of Bandinelli after a lost original by him. The drawing is faintly inscribed at lower left: 'Baccio Bandinelli'.
Provenance
Probably one of the drawings listed in George III’s Inventory A, c.1770, p. 17 (an inserted sheet that pre-dates the rest of the inventory), ‘Diversi Maestri Antichi’, Tom. V, ‘13 by Baccio Bandinelli.’ This is probably the same group of 13 drawings listed on p. 47 (c.1800-20), ‘Michael Angelo, Fra: Bartolomeo, And: del Sarto &[c]’, Tom. III, ‘17 to 29 … Various Studys of Baccio Bandinello.’
