A drawing of a group of women and children, seated on the ground, perhaps for a Miracle of the loaves and fishes.
Inscribed in the 'Deceptive hand', 'Bacio Bandinelli', apparently repeated an inscription on the laid-down verso, which can plausibly be read as 'B.... Bandinello'(?). After first considering Dirck de Vries and Aurelio Luini (notes on back of mount), Popham attributed the drawing to Giovanni Battista Ricci on stylistic grounds. Mario Di Giampaolo reasserted the attribution to Luini (note on mount, 1994), surely correctly.Provenance
Probably one of the drawings listed in George III’s Inventory A, c.1770, p. 17 (an inserted sheet that pre-dates the rest of the inventory), ‘Diversi Maestri Antichi’, Tom. V, ‘13 by Baccio Bandinelli.’ This is probably the same group of 13 drawings listed on p. 47 (c.1800-20), ‘Michael Angelo, Fra: Bartolomeo, And: del Sarto &[c]’, Tom. III, ‘17 to 29 … Various Studys of Baccio Bandinello.’
