Attributed to Baccio Bandinelli (1493-1560)
A seated youth c.1525-50
-
A drawing of a youth seated on folding stool wearing a voluminous mantle. Irregularly cut and made up to a rectangle. Popham (in P&W 1949) thought it was 'perhaps only a copy by a pupil', but the handling is assured and the modelling of the drapery in particular is of high quality, and this may be an original drawing by Bandinelli.
Provenance
Probably one of the drawings listed in George III’s Inventory A, c.1770, p. 17 (an inserted sheet that pre-dates the rest of the inventory), ‘Diversi Maestri Antichi’, Tom. V, ‘13 by Baccio Bandinelli.’ This is probably the same group of 13 drawings listed on p. 47 (c.1800-20), ‘Michael Angelo, Fra: Bartolomeo, And: del Sarto &[c]’, Tom. III, ‘17 to 29 … Various Studys of Baccio Bandinello.’
