God the Father with angels 1525-75
-
A drawing of God the Father, surrounded by clouds and supported by child angels.
A.E. Popham first considered Pordenone and then Girolamo da Treviso as the author of this work (notes on mount), but concluded (in P&W): 'There is a certain relationship in style to drawings by Girolamo da Treviso, but it does not seem to be by him, and I would tentatively suggest that it is the work of Francesco Menzocchi of Forli (where Girolamo da Treviso was also at work). The subject may be compared with the God the Father in the upper pat of the altarpiece in the Pinacoteca at Forli and with the corresponding portion of the altarpiece in the church of the Santa Trinita, Forli.'
See another drawing by Menzocchi of God and cherubs in the British Museum, 1895,0915.647; the manner of drawing the cherubs' faces is very similar.Provenance
Presumably in the Royal Collection by 1800, but not identifiable in George III's Inventory A.
