Red chalk | 24.6 x 16.3 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 990357

Attributed to Giuseppe Cesari, Cavaliere d'Arpino (1568-1640)
A nude youth c.1590-1600
-
A drawing of a male nude or ignudo, holding a garland, in a vaguely indicated architectural setting.
The drawing was catalogued among the school of the Carracci by Wittkower (W(C) 572), but the figure and drawing style are close to Giuseppe Cesari, Cavaliere d'Arpino - compare his studies for the decorations in the Sala degli Orazi e Curiazi in the Palazzo dei Conservatori, Rome, c. 1597. A drawing in the British Museum (Pp, 4.38), in black chalk, shows a nude standing, holding a curtain, was incorporated in the fresco decoration. Other studies, such as a red chalk drawing with two putti in the Art Institute Museum in Chicago (Inv. 22683), were not included in the fresco.
