Bernardino Campi (1522-1591)
Christ driving the money changers from the temple c.1589
-
A drawing of Christ driving the money-changers from the Temple, carefully finished and squared for transfer. Inscribed in the 'Deceptive Hand' at lower right, 'parmeggiano', but Pouncey (recorded in P&W) recognised the hand of Bernardino Campi. The drawing is a pair to one in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge (PD.2903), of the Raising of the Son of the Widow of Nain, which is study for a fresco by Bernardino in San Prospero, Reggio in Emilia, painted in 1589. There is no fresco in that scheme corresponding to the present design; the painted pair to the Fitzwilliam composition is the Fall of Jezebel, so presumably this was a rejected composition.
