After Raphael (1483-1520)
The Miraculous Draught of Fishes c.1520-40
-
A drawing after Raphael's Miraculous Draught of Fishes. Christ is seated in the boat with his arm raised. St Peter kneels before him looking up. Another male figure advances towards them with his arms outstretched. On the right, two other figures bend over and point to the fish in the water. It is likely that this drawing is either a copy of RCIN 912749, or from the chiaroscuro woodcut by Ugo da Carpi. The drawing has been stamped at lower left with the five-pointed star mark associated with Nicholas Lanier (Lugt 2886). It has also been stamped three times in the boat in the space between Christ and St Peter with a spiral star mark not associated with a known collector (Lugt 2887). It is inscribed in a seventeenth-century hand at lower left: Raphaello di Urbino .
Provenance
Nicholas Lanier (?his five-pointed star, Lugt 2886); probably acquired by Charles II; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory c.1810 ('Inventory A', p. 49, Raffaello d'Urbino e Scuola 3. 'A Copy of the above [i.e. RCIN 912749] once held for an Original. This of ye same Collection [Charles I]'
