The Birth of Bacchus 1525-75
-
A drawing of the seated Jupiter removing the infant Bacchus from his thigh, three female assistants to the right; in an octagon. Inscribed in pencil along the lower edge: Bertano; Stefano l'Occaso (correspondence, 2014) identified the drawing as a study by G.B. Bertani for the Camera di Bacco in the Apartamento Rustico of the Palazzo Ducale, Mantua.
Related drawings are in the Louvre (6044) and the Royal Museums, Brussels (4060/2833).Provenance
From the collection of Nicholas Lanier (?his five-pointed star, Lugt 2886); thus probably acquired by Charles II. Probably from the album listed in George III's Inventory A, c.1800-20, p. 52, 'Guilio [sic] Romano, Polidoro, e Perino del Vaga. Tom. 1. Containing 49 Drawings not entered.'
