After Giulio Romano (Rome c. 1499-Mantua 1546)
The Chariot of the Sun 1525 - 1600
-
A drawing of Apollo driving a chariot pulled by two horses, seen from below: a copy after Giulio's design for the ceiling decoration of the Sala del Sole in Palazzo Te, Mantua.
The drawing was claimed by K. Oberhuber (in Giulio Romano, Mantua 1989, p. 357) to be an original study by Giulio, but is clearly a copy. A similar drawing can be found in the National Gallery of Ireland (NGI.2325). The drawing is stamped at lower right with the five-pointed star mark associated with Nicholas Lanier (Lugt 2886).Provenance
Nicholas Lanier (?his five-pointed star, Lugt 2886); thus probably acquired by Charles II. Listed in George III’s Inventory A, c.1800-20: p. 52, ‘Guilio [sic] Romano, Polidoro, e Perino del Vaga’, Tom. 2, no. 3, ‘Sol in the Meredian’.
