After Giulio Romano (Rome c. 1499-Mantua 1546)
Hercules and the Lion 1525 - 1600
-
A drawing of Hercules wrestling with a lion, before a cave. Engraved in the same direction by Adamo Ghisi (Bartsch XV, p. 423, p. 21); the same group, seen from the back, is reproduced in an anonymous chiaroscuro woodcut (Bartsch XII, p. 118, no. 17), and both are probably based on inventions of Giulio Romano. Popham (in P&W) suggested that the present drawing might be by Ghisi.
Provenance
Presumably Royal Collection by 1800, but not listed in George III’s Inventory A, c.1800-20.
