Girolamo da Carpi (1501-56)
Bacchic procession c.1525-50
-
A drawing of a Bacchic procession, with a centaur, satyrs, bacchantes, cupids and animals, probably from the antique though no prototype has been identified. The attribution to Girolamo was apparently an old one and was accepted by Popham (in P&W), though he noted that the facial types are close to those characteristic of Giulio Romano; possibly the drawing is a copy after an original invention of Giulio.
F. Antal in a review of P&W, Burlington Magazine 1951, p. 32, suggested alternatively Battista Franco. -
