After Domenico Beccafumi (1486-1551)
The decoration of the angle of a vault in the form of a triangle c.1540-1600
-
A triangular section of a vault, with figures on rafts in a circle at the centre (the Flood?). The drawing corresponds with part of the decoration of the vaulting of the Palazzo Bindi-Sergardi at Siena.
Popham (in P&W) judged that 'in spite of the almost exact correspondence with the fresco the drawing is carried out in Beccafumi's very individual manner and seems to be an original'; but the pedestrian and uniform finish is surely indicative of a copy (as expressed by F. Antal in his review of P&W, in Burlington Magazine, 1951, p. 35). Inscribed in pencil at lower centre: 'Macharino' (Beccafumi's nickname). -
