Giuseppe Passeri (1654-1714)
A hero crowned by Victory
-
A drawing of a hero in armour standing on raised ground, whilst a figure of Victory holds a crown over his head. Before him kneels a bound captive, behind whom is a lion. A second lion is on the right, and beside it are two putti, one carrying an olive branch. In the foreground is a cornucopia. This is closely related to a drawing in the National Gallery of Canada (cat no. 97), which was probably made for the decoration of a ceiling.
Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1800-1820 (Inv. A, p. 110: 'Mostly Historical, Sacred and Profane')
