Alessandro Allori (Florence 1535-Florence 1607)
Studies of a foot c.1560-1570
-
Three studies of a right foot: below, the whole foot, with an ornate collar and Michelangelesque grotesque mask around the ankle; above right, the skin removed to show the tendons and (indistinctly) the muscles; above left, the bones; these last two with drapery wrapped around the shin. Catalogued by Popham (in P&W) as anonymous Florentine, but as Pouncey recognised (as recorded in the appendix to the reprint of P&W, 1984), this is one of a sequence of similar anatomical drawings by Allori. Others include a sheet showing the same stages of dissection of a left leg in the Uffizi (inv. 190-S; Mostra di disegni di Alessandro Allori, 1970, no. 17, dating that drawing c.1565-70; what seems to be a sharp copy of that drawing is at Chatsworth, inv. 890); and ditto a right hand in the Louvre (inv. 12).
Inscribed in black chalk at lower left, indistinctly, 'MA Buona Rota'. Inscribed in pen on a label formerly on the verso, and now attached to the reverse of the mount, 'MAngolo Buonarotti, 3. 2.', in the hand of William Gibson.Provenance
William Gibson (his ascription and price mark, on a label formerly on the verso); thus probably acquired by Charles II. Listed in George III's 'Inventory A,' c.1810, p.44, 'Mich: Angelo Buonarroti. / Tom. I.', no. 31: 'Three Studies for the Human Foot….Black Chalk.'
