After Michelangelo Buonarroti (Caprese 1475-Rome 1564)
A torso and left arm c.1510-20
-
A drawing of a left arm and torso of a twisting male nude, copied after the figure of Noah’s son in the Sacrifice of Noah, one of the scenes frescoed by Michelangelo in the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel (or, perhaps more likely, copied after one of Michelangelo's preparatory studies for that figure).
The style of this high quality drawing suggests a Florentine artist working soon after the fresco was completed. Popham had earlier suggested an attribution to Parmigianino (note on mount); Paul Joannides suggests early Salviati (in correspondence). The drawing is inscribed indistinctly in red chalk. Wilde (in P&W) read the inscription as ‘el finira’; it might alternatively be read as 'Beffuma', conceivably an early ascription to Domenico Beccafumi.
Provenance
Possibly, but not at all certainly, among the drawings listed in George III's Inventory A, c.1800, p. 44, 'Mich: Angelo Buonarroti', Tom. I: '41 to 46. Studies for Prophets; Sybills &c. in the Cieling / of the Capella Sistina; at the Vatican.'
