A drawing of St Peter, half-length in a niche, the keys in his right hand, a book in his left hand; a pair to 990201, St Paul.
Popham (in P&W) accepted the old attribution to Niccolò Circignano, il Pomerancio (rather than Cristoforo Roncalli, also called Pomerancio). Leif Holm Monssen (correspondence, 1975?) associated the two drawings with frescoes by Pomerancio in Santo Stefano Rotondo, Rome, presumably referring to the group of saints gathered around Christ in the apse of that church, but St Peter there has a different aspect.
Philip Pouncey (note on mount, 1971) suggested instead Bartolomeo Neroni (Riccio).Provenance
Listed in George III’s Inventory A, c.1800, p. 146, ‘An unbound Volume (a Portfolio) containing The following’, ‘23 St. Paul, by the same’ [ie. ‘the Cavale. dalla Pomerancio’].
