A drawing of St Paul, half-length in a niche, the sword in his left hand, a book in his right hand; a pair to 990202, St Peter.
Popham (in P&W) accepted an old inscription on the mount attributing the pair of drawings to Niccolò Circignano, il Pomerancio (rather than Cristoforo Roncalli, also called Pomerancio). Leif Holm Monssen (correspondence, 1975?) reportedly associated the two drawings with frescoes by Pomerancio in Santo Stefano Rotondo, Rome, presumably referring to the group of saints gathered around Christ in the apse of that church, but St Paul there has a different aspect.
Philip Pouncey (note on mount, 1971) suggested instead Bartolomeo Neroni (Riccio).Provenance
Listed in George III’s Inventory A, c.1800, p. 146, ‘An unbound Volume (a Portfolio) containing The following’, ‘22 St. Peter, by the Cavale. dalla Pomerancio’.
