A drawing of the scene described in the Aeneid, book XII, as the duel between Aeneas and Turnus reaches its climax. The opposing armies of Trojans and Latins watch anxiously at the sides, while Mercury hovers above and Juno observes from a cloud. Inscribed, lower left; Romaneli.

Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c. 1800-1820 (Inv. A, p. 113: 'By Romanelli, a Coriolanus. And a Duel in the presence of the Army. Camillus punishing the treacherous Schoolmaster')
