After Federico Zuccaro (c. 1542-1609)
Augustus and the Sibyl c.1565-1600
-
A drawing of the Emperor Augustus kneeling before the Tiburtine Sibyl in the Forum, the Sibyl pointing upwards to a vision of the Virgin and Child.
This is a copy of a much larger drawing by Federico Zuccaro at Chatsworth (no. 345), which is shaped to fit into a pointed arch, preparatory for a fresco in the north transept of the Cappella Pucci-Cauco in SS. Trinità dei Monti, Rome. The decoration of the Chapel was the last major commission to Taddeo Zuccaro, who painted the Dormition and Assumption of the Virgin around 1564-66. Federico completed the frescoes after Taddeo’s death in 1566, although it is likely that he was involved in the project with his older brother from the start. A drawing by Taddeo Zuccaro of the two figures of Augustus and the Sibyl is in the Louvre, 10347 (J. Gere, Taddeo Zuccaro, 1969, no. 190).
Inscribed at lower right: 'Nic. del Abbate'. Popham (in P&W, 1949) accordingly catalogued the drawing as 'after Niccolo dell'Abbate', as the connection between the Chatsworth drawing and the Trinita fresco had not then been made. Blunt (Misc.) accepted the present drawing as an autograph work by Federico, but the style is not his and the handling of the drawing is indicative of a copy.Provenance
