After Giovanni Baglione (1566-1643)
The muse Erato after 1621
-
A drawing of the muse Erato holding a viol, Cupid with a lighted torch to left. Much silverfish damage around the edges.
The composition corresponds with a canvas from Baglione's series of Apollo and the Muses, painted in Mantua c.1621, now in the Museum at Arras (Pouncey's identification recorded in P&W reprint, 1984, p. 394). But the style of the drawing is not Baglione's, and the careful finish is indicative of a copy after the painting.
The drawing was earlier attributed to Niccolo dell'Abbate, and Popham (in P&W 1949) accepted it as of his school. -
