Flora c. 1640-60
-
A design for a ceiling painting featuring Flora, bouyed aloft with a basket of flowers and a torch. She is surrounded by winged putti holding flowers and petals. Squared for transfer in red chalk.
This drawing appears to be Venetian on account of the di sotto in su perspective, and is close in general character to the designs of Pietro Liberi (1605-87), such as the Glory of St Antony, in the Sacristy of the Santo, Padua.Provenance
Probably acquired in 1762 by George III from the collection of Joseph Smith, British Consul in Venice
