The Calumny of Apelles c.1630-40
Black chalk (offset) | 19.7 x 42.2 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 990099
-
An offset from a drawing based on an allegory of calumny painted by Apelles; on the left, the King is seated, accompanied by Suspicion and Ignorance; in the centre Innocence, kneeling, is held by the hair by Calumny with her flaming torch, watched by Treachery and Deceit; on the right Penitence is in conversation with Naked Truth. This is probably an offset after a copy of a drawing by Primaticcio, connected with the decoration of the Salle de Bal at Fontainebleu.
Provenance
Probably in the Royal Collection by c.1810
