Master: DRAWING EXERCISE BOOK OF ALBERT EDWARD 1852-3 Item: Studies of faces dated 23 Feb 1853
-
A pencil drawing showing two face studies. The study to the left, after RCIN 981645.p, shows a mouth, with suggestions of nose and chin facing, left in profile. The study to the right shows a nose and eye, facing right in profile. Circles fill the rest of the page. Inscribed in a box to the lower left: A.E. fecit. February. 23d. 1853. Buckingham Palace. Wednesday. Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, was given art lessons from an early age, and from 1852 began to learn Watercolour painting with Edward Corbould. Edward Corbould was a favourite tutor to the royal children as his light-hearted approach won him the affection of his pupils. This sketchbook is one of three in which he encouraged the Prince of Wales to practise watercolour and penmanship. Like his sisters, the Prince of Wales frequently presented his parents with works of art for birthdays and at Christmas, but he does not seem to have continued painting as an adult hobby.
