Inscribed below mounted sheet: Upper part of the Rhone Glacier Aug./Sep. 1868
Princess Louise stayed in Pension Wallis, Lucerne, with her mother, Queen Victoria, from 7 August to 9 September 1868. The Queen wanted to see the Alps, which her beloved Prince Albert had visited before their marriage, and her doctors had also advised the Queen that the fresh air would be good for her health. On 22 August 1868 the royal party made an expedition to Furca through the St. Gotthard Pass. They stayed at the Furca Hotel from 22 to 25 August 1868, making daily trips to local beauty spots. Princess Louise visited the Rhone Glacier on both 23 and 24 August 1868.
This drawing is housed in an album of drawings by Princess Louise. For other items in the volume see Princess Louise Album. -
