A pencil drawing with watercolour wash worked up from a sketch called The Quarry near the Dee. Water is shown in the foreground, studded with rocks. A forest covered hill is shown on the bank to the right and mountains are shown in the background to the left. Inscribed below pasted down sheet: The same view as below [referring to RCIN 980055.w]

While staying at Balmoral, Queen Victoria made many expeditions to local beauty spots. On 1 September 1849, when the original drawing (980028.ao) was created, the Queen and Prince Albert visited a local quarry. In her journal entry of that day, Queen Victoria describes how she "sat & sketched, & Albert occupied himself with picking up curious stones". -
