While staying at Balmoral, Queen Victoria made many expeditions to local beauty spots, often stopping at different shiels around the estate. Queen Victoria stayed at the Allt-na-Giubhsaich Shiel, with Prince Albert, overnight on the 30 August 1849. Two new buildings had been added to the Shiel since their last visit and Queen Victoria describes how they "were amazed at the transformation" in her journal entry of 30 August 1849. In her journal entry of the 31 August 1849, Queen Victoria then describes how "It seemed like a dream on waking up, to find ourselves here [at the shiel], — but a very pleasant one — ... I sketched the Hut". -
