A watercolour showing Lochnagar Mountain. A heather covered hill is shown in the foreground, with a winding road to the left. Lochnagar is shown in the background, covered in snow. Inscribed below pasted down sheet: Loch Nagar from Craig Gowan. Oct: 3 - 1853. Inscribed lower right: VR del Oct: 3. 1853. While staying at Balmoral, Queen Victoria made many expeditions to local beauty spots. In her journal entry of 3 October 1853, Queen Victoria describes how she climbed to the top of Craig Gowan with her Lady of the Bedchamber, Charlotte, Viscountess Canning, "to sketch the view of Loch Nagar covered with snow, with the sun shining upon it, & such brilliant colouring in the foreground".
