While staying at Balmoral, Queen Victoria made many expeditions to local beauty spots. In her journal entry of 3 October 1853, Queen Victoria describes how she climbed to the top of Craig Gowan with her Lady of the Bedchamber, Charlotte, Viscountess Canning, "to sketch the view of Loch Nagar covered with snow, with the sun shining upon it, & such brilliant colouring in the foreground".
