A watercolour showing Lochnagar Mountain. A low hill is shown sloping down from the right in the foreground. It is shown covered in boulders and heather. Lochnagar is shown in the background. Inscribed below pasted down sheet: Loch Nagar [sic] & the Forest from Craig Gowan. Inscribed lower right:VR del Oct: 1. 1853. While staying at Balmoral, Queen Victoria made many expeditions to local beauty spots. On 1 October 1853, the Queen visited Craig Gowan with her Lady of the Bedchamber, Charlotte, Viscountess Canning. Queen Victoria describes how she "was out for 2 hours & ½ sketching , with Ly Canning on Craig Gowan" in her journal entry of that day.
