A watercolour showing a view of Lochnagar mountain from Craig Gowan. A forest is shown to the lower left. Inscribed below pasted down sheet: Lochnagar & the Forest from Craig Gowan. Inscribed lower right: VR del: Sept: 18. 1852. While staying at Balmoral, Queen Victoria made many expeditions to local beauty spots. On 18 September 1852, the Queen went out drawing with her eldest child, Victoria, Princess Royal. Queen Victoria records the trip in her journal entry of that day, describing how she: "went out sketching with Vicky, 1rst, near the Dee, & then on the top of Craig Gowan, the fine view of Loch Nagar".
