A watercolour showing a partial view of the Abbey at Holyrood House. The abbey is shown from the side, facing to the right. Inscribed below pasted down sheet: Holyrood Chapel from the window of the Palace. Inscribed lower right: VR del Aug: 30. 1850. Queen Victoria stayed at Holyrood on 30 August 1850 with her young family, while Prince Albert lay the foundation stone for the National Gallery of Fine Art in Edinburgh (now the Scottish National Gallery). In her journal entry of 30 August 1850, Queen Victoria describes how "After luncheon [I] made a sketch of the Chapel, from our windows".
