Inscribed below mounted sheet: View from the new House at Osborne VR del: Sept: 15. 1846.
The Osborne Estate, on the Isle of Wight, was purchased by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1845. Work was started straight away on rebuilding Osborne House in the Italianate style, to designs by Prince Albert, and the royal family stayed there for lengthy periods each year. In her journal entry of 15 September 1846, Queen Victoria describes how she "Wrote, read, & sketched out of my window, from which the view over the sea, is quite beautiful". -
