A watercolour showing a view of building and trees at the foot of a mountain, probably from the Balcony of the Maison Mottet, France. A lawn is shown in the lower foreground, with two small houses shown behind a path at the edge. Trees are shown behind and a mountain peak is shown rising up in the background to the right. Inscribed lower right: [illegible word] Ap. 19 1885.
Queen Victoria stayed at the Maison Mottet, part of the Hotel de l'Europe in Aix-les-Bains from the 1 to 22 April 1885. In her journal entry of 19 April 1885, Queen Victoria describes how she "Sat & sketched on the balcony. It is such a peaceful, quiet spot, though the high road, runs just below it". -
