A watercolour showing a twilight view of a Highland hill near Glen Gelder. A valley is shown in the lower foreground, with the hill shown rising up behind against a setting sky. Inscribed lower left: [?looking to] [three illegible words] Sept: 11. 1875.
While staying at Balmoral Queen Victoria made many expeditions to local beauty spots. On 11 September 1875, the Queen visited The Gelder Shiel in Glen Gelder with her daughter-in-law Princess Alexandra of Wales. In her journal entry of that day, Queen Victoria describes how she "Drove with dear Alix to the Gelder Shiel, where we took tea & sketched. [It was] A lovely mild evening & the view & soft blue of the hills, quite exquisite". -
