A hill is shown on the far riverbank, sloping down from the right and dotted with trees. Trees are shown at the foot of the hill and further hills are shown in the background. Inscribed lower right: The Linn of Dee June 18. 1874. While staying at Balmoral Queen Victoria made many expeditions to local beauty spots. On 18 June 1874, the Queen visited the Linn of Dee with members of her household. In her journal entry of that day, Queen Victoria describes how they "took our tea in the usual place, below the bridge, but were driven away by the midges & had to get into the carriage, from which I sketched".
