Queen Victoria stayed at Inverlochy Castle from 9 to 16 September 1873 as a guest of Lord Abinger. On the afternoon of 12 September 1873 the royal party went in a carriage along the Caledonian Canal to Loch Lochy and then on to Loch Arkaig. In her journal entry of that day, Queen Victoria describes how at Loch Arkaig they "embarked from a little pier on board a very small, but nice screw steamer...The afternoon was beautiful & the sun lit up the fine scenery to the greatest advantage...Tried to sketch a little, but the sun shone so strongly, I could not do much". The next day the royal party made a visit to Glencoe.
