Queen Victoria stayed at Inverary Castle from 22 to 29 September 1875 as a guest of the Duke of Argyll, the father of her son-in-law the Marquess of Lorne. The Queen's daughter Princess Louise had married the Marquess of Lorne on 21 March 1871. On 28 September 1875 Queen Victoria went on a carriage ride along the loch as far as the Douglas Water Point with her daughters Princess Louise and Princess Beatrice. In her journal entry of that day, Queen Victoria describes how they "stopped to sketch, between frequent showers, the view & lights being so lovely".
