A watercolour showing a view of a Highland landscape near Craig Gowan. Trees are shown covering a valley in the foreground. A snow-capped mountain, probably Lochnagar, is shown behind. Inscribed lower left: From road below Craig Gowan Oct: 13. 1874. While staying at Balmoral Queen Victoria made many expeditions to local beauty spots. On 13 Oct 1874 the Queen went for a carriage-ride around the local area with members of her household. Queen Victoria records how she sketched while out in the carriage in her journal entry of that day and also describes how "Loch Nagar & the high surrounding hills were quite white & the sun as it gradually sank lower & lower cast splendid rich tints on the moor & the trees in front".
