A watercolour showing a view of a Highland landscape at sunset, probably in Glen Derry. A glen is shown in the foreground, with a small river shown in the centre. Hills are shown behind, on either side of the river and trees are shown in the foreground. Further hills are shown in the background against a setting sky. Inscribed lower left: [illegible word] Nov: 5. 1870. While staying at Balmoral Queen Victoria made many expeditions to local beauty spots. On 5 November 1879 the Queen visited Glen Derry with her daughter Princess Beatrice, staying there all day. In her journal entry of that day, Queen Victoria describes how "The setting sun was splendid, & lit up everything, with most glorious colours".
