A watercolour showing a view of Loch Callater. The bank of the loch is shown in the foreground, sloping down from the right. A path is shown on the bank in the lower foreground, snaking round to the right. One large rock is shown in the centre, with smaller rocks to the left. The loch is shown to the lower left and in the background. Inscribed lower left: [L]och Callater Oct: 1. 1870. While staying at Balmoral Queen Victoria made many expeditions to local beauty spots. On 1 October 1870 the Queen visited Loch Callater with her daughter Princess Beatrice. In her journal entry of that day, Queen Victoria describes how she "Sat sketching for some time" at the loch while "Beatrice tried to fish a little".
