A watercolour showing a view of Mount Pilatus, Switzerland. A forest is shown to the lower foreground, with the mountain shown rising up behind. Inscribed lower left: 1868. Inscribed on separate mounted sheet: Pilatus from near House. Sunday Sept: 6. Queen Victoria stayed at Pension Wallis, Lucerne from 7 August to 9 September 1868. The Queen wanted to see the Alps, which her beloved Prince Albert had visited before their marriage, and her doctors had also advised the Queen that the fresh air would be good for her health. During their stay the royal party visited many local beauty spots. In her journal entry of 6 September 1868, Queen Victoria describes how she "Drove in the afternoon with Louise, & sketched in a field, where we took our tea, [it had] a beautiful view of Pilatus".
