A watercolour showing a view of Mount Pilatus from Lake Lucerne, Switzerland. The lake is shown in the lower foreground, with the mountain rising up behind. A forest is shown at the foot of the mountain and the reflection of the mountain peak is shown on the water. Inscribed lower left: Sept: 3. 1868 Pilatus from on board the steamer. Queen Victoria stayed at Pension Wallis, Lucerne from 7 August to 9 September 1868. The Queen wanted to see the Alps, which her beloved Prince Albert had visited before their marriage, and her doctors had also advised the Queen that the fresh air would be good for her health. On 3 September 1868, the royal party travelled by steamer to beauty spots around Lake Lucerne. In her journal entry of that day, Queen Victoria describes how "the Alpenglücken was so splendid on the Pilatus, that we stopped to sketch".
