The Queen wanted to see the Alps, which her beloved Prince Albert had visited before their marriage, and her doctors had also advised the Queen that the fresh air would be good for her health. On 3 September 1868, the royal party travelled by steamer to beauty spots around Lake Lucerne. In her journal entry of that day, Queen Victoria describes how "the Alpenglücken was so splendid on the Pilatus, that we stopped to sketch".
