A watercolour on a folded sheet of paper showing the Rhône Glacier. The Glacier is shown across the sheet. Inscribed lower left: Upper part of the Rhone Glacier.
On outside of folded sheet: a pencil drawing showing a view of Swiss mountains near Furca.
Queen Victoria stayed in Lucerne, Switzerland from 7 August to 9 September 1868. The Queen wanted to see the Alps, which her beloved Prince Albert had visited before their marriage, and her doctors had also advised the Queen that the fresh air would be good for her health. On 22 August 1868 Queen Victoria and her party, including her daughter Princess Louise, made an expedition to Furca through the St. Gotthard Pass. They stayed at the Furca Hotel from 22 to 25 August 1868, making daily trips to local beauty spots. -
