A watercolour showing a view of the Furkahorn, Switzerland. A ridge is shown in the foreground, sloping down to the right. Further peaks are shown behind and snow-capped mountains are shown in the background. Inscribed lower left: From the Foot of the Furcahorn [sic] Aug: 24. 1868 - Queen Victoria stayed in Lucerne, Switzerland from 7 August to 9 September 1868. The Queen wanted to see the Alps, which her beloved Prince Albert had visited before their marriage, and her doctors had also advised the Queen that the fresh air would be good for her health. On 22 August 1868 Queen Victoria and her party, including her daughter Princess Louise, made an expedition to Furca through the St. Gotthard Pass. They stayed at the Furca Hotel from 22 to 25 August 1868, making daily trips to local beauty spots. In her journal entry of 24 August 1868, Queen Victoria describes how she and her daughter Princess Louise walked "a little way up the hillside, at the foot of the Furcahorn, & sat down & sketched".
