A watercolour showing a view of Cherbourg Harbour. The sea is shown in the foreground, with the harbour shown at the foot of a cliff behind. Buildings are shown to the left and on top of the cliff to the right. Inscribed lower left: Cherbourg Harbour Aug. 5 1868. Queen Victoria stayed at Pension Wallis, Lucerne from 7 August to 9 September 1868. The Queen wanted to see the Alps, which her beloved Prince Albert had visited before their marriage, and her doctors had also advised the Queen that the fresh air would be good for her health. The royal party left Osborne for Cherbourg on 5 August 1868 and continued their journey from there by train.
