A watercolour showing a view of Ben Macdui from Glen Derry. A steeply sloping ridge is shown in the foreground to the right, lined with trees. Ben Macdui is shown behind. Inscribed on upper left of mounted sheet: Glen Derry looking [?up towards] Ben March Dhui [sic] Oct 21 1867. While staying at Balmoral Queen Victoria made many expeditions to local beauty spots. On 21 October 1867 the Queen visited Glen Derry with her daughters Princess Helena and Princess Louise and son-in-law Prince Christian of Schleswig-Holstein. In her journal entry of that day, Queen Victoria describes how they "took our luncheon on a high bank, from which we had a lovely view of all the high mountains".
