A watercolour showing a Highland landscape near Balmoral. Mountains are shown in the background, with a forest shown in the foreground below. Inscribed lower left: Oct: 19. 1863. While staying at Balmoral, Queen Victoria made many expeditions to local beauty spots. On 19 October 1863, the Queen went for a ride with her second daughter, Princess Alice. While riding they met with the artist William Leighton Leitch, who was staying at Balmoral to provide lessons to the Royal family during their stay in Scotland. Queen Victoria records the ride in her journal entry of 19 October 1863, describing how "The lights were too lovely" and they "sketched for some time".
