A watercolour showing a view of Lochnagar from the Meall an t-Slugain. Two hills are shown in the foreground, sloping down to the centre. Lochnagar is shown in the background, against a clear blue sky. Inscribed on RCIN 980040.cc verso: Loch Nagar from the Sluggan [sic] Oct: 25. 1867. While staying at Balmoral Queen Victoria made many expeditions to local beauty spots. On 25 October 1867 the Queen visited the Meall an t-Slugain with two of her children, Princess Louise and Prince Leopold. In her journal entry of that day, Queen Victoria describes how "The views [were] quite beautiful, & not a cloud to be seen in the sky. I never saw anything finer & the air was heavenly. Sketched a little, than rode up to the top".
